Statement from County Executive James R. Williams on the Federal Administration's Actions to Deny Immigrants Access to Critical Federally Funded Services

“The federal government’s decision to deny access to critical social safety net programs funded by the federal government for some of our immigrant community members undermines the fundamental commitment that this nation has made to the health and well-being of all American families. By rescinding a longstanding 30-year-old rule, this federal administration is trying to sabotage local governments from being able to fulfill our duty to serve our most vulnerable community members.

“So many families rely on vital government services for access to mental health services, primary and emergency care, and social services designed to protect children in need. Now, the federal administration is callously saying that these essential resources should be available only for some families and not others — in essence, creating a two-tiered system at odds with our American values.

“We are a nation and a community of immigrants. More than 40% of our residents in Santa Clara County are foreign-born.  As a County, we believe that everyone in our community is welcome here, deserves to be safe, and should have access to the resources they need to thrive — which is what makes our entire community thrive. Indeed, our diversity is our strength.

“To be clear: County services remain open and accessible to anyone in need. During this time of extraordinary challenge, we remain committed to doing everything we can to utilize our local resources as efficiently as possible to take care of those most in need in our community.

“No matter the actions of this federal administration, every family and every person in our community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We will continue to stand up for our community here in Santa Clara County, protect critical social safety-net services, and ensure that our immigrant families are supported.”
